Physicians Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1902 basically to provide medical professionals with health insurance.  It was the idea of Edwin E Elliott who lived in Omaha, Nebraska and together with his family and a Board of Directors which comprised of surgeons and physicians the Company grew quickly.  By 1962 the Company was able to offer health insurance to other Americans who were worried about paying medical costs should they become ill.  As it was a mutual Insurance Company any profits were paid back to the policyholders as dividends.  At the time most Americans did not have medical insurance and thousands of people bought policies.  Having medical insurance is very important as without it people often have to sell their homes and possessions simply to pay doctors or hospital bills. By offering medical Insurance to everyone the Company expanded further and by 1967 began selling insurance through career agents. The Physicians Life Insurance Company was started in 1970 when they started to sell life insurance.  This progressed to selling other insurance products such as dental insurance, long term care insurance and supplemental health insurance.  It also offers Medicare Supplement insurance for people under the age of 65.
