Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company has come a long way since the early days when it was first founded as the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Columbus, Ohio.  At the time it was required by Ohio law that one hundred people had to policyholders before an insurance company could be started.  However, they started business on April 12th 1926 with ten times that number having 1,000 policyholders.  At first the company only insured the Ohio farmers with automobile insurance but two years later began offering insurance to West Virginia farmers followed by farmers in Vermont, Delaware, Maryland and North Carolina.  By 1934 it was insuring residents in much larger cities as well as offering fire insurance. As the Company grew it needed bigger offices and in 1936 moved its offices to 246 Building on 246 N.High Street in Columbus. As the Company grew even bigger it began opening up regional offices and by 1955 Farm Bureau Mutual changed its name and became known as Nationwide Insurance.  Nationwide expanded into 19 other and by 1965 had offices in 32 states as well as the District of Columbia.

The Company needed an even bigger building as their main headquarters and in 1970 work began to build new headquarters for the Company.  This new skyscraper building known as Nationwide Plaza was completed in 1978 and occupies the southwest corner of N.High Street together with Nationwide Blvd. which was also built on the north side of downtown Columbus.  Today Nationwide is truly nationwide and employs 36,000 employees and is a Fortune 500 company. Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company also helped the city of Columbus by building a sports arena adjacent to One Nationwide Plaza. Although the city of Columbus was the 15th largest city in America by 1997 it had no professional sports franchise. By building the sports arena, now known as the Nationwide Arena it enabled Columbus to compete in major professional sports.  It now has hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues and is the centrepiece of the Arena District.  After a $50 million donation to the Columbus Children's hospital on September 24th 2007 it was renamed as Nationwide Children's Hospital.  More recently Nationwide has co-sponsored Columbus Zoo Director Jack Hanna's "Into the Wild" TV show.

Today Nationwide offers insurance to cover buildings, casualty, life insurance, retirement savings as well as strategic investments.  It is one of the largest insurance companies in the world and can be relied upon to offer the very best for all their policyholders as well as giving good financial advice
